U.S. MOVING AHEAD WITH THAAD DEPLOYMENT TO SOUTH KOREA
SEOUL - The United States is moving ahead with plans to send Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems to South Korea. This system will help to enhance the U.S. capability to defend South Korean territory from missile attacks by Pyongyang.
The U.S. government dismissed Russia's concerns that deploying a THAAD battery to South Korea could trigger an arms race in Northeast Asia. Moscow believes this plan will have a negative impact on the region. Washington said the defense system is not aimed at Russia.
The commander for U.S. forces in South Korea asked in June for the deployment of THAAD to South Korea. The THAAD battery is needed to meet the evolving missile threat from North Korea.
Lockheed Martin manufactures the THAAD system.
