SURABAYA - Indonesia has begun construction of a new frigate for its navy. The work is taking place at PT PAL with help from Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS), the Dutch naval company. The PT PAL Indonesia shipyard is located in Surabaya, East Java.
Indonesia has four SIGMA 9113 class warships in active service by 2009. These warships carry MICA air defense and MM40 Exocet anti-ship missiles. In August 2010, Indonesia signed a deal to build the PKR 105 based on SIGMA 10514 at PT PAL Shipyard Indonesia. A second contract was signed in February 2013.
The current project is divided into six modules or sections. Four of these sections will be built by PT PAL and the other two in the Netherlands. Indonesian officials believe construction will take around 48 months to complete. The first frigate could be finished at the end of December 2016.
The PKR frigate will carry lightweight torpedoes and surface-to-air missiles (SAMs).
