CANBERRA - Australia is sending unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) to support the U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (IASIS), also known as the Islamic State (IS). These UAVs will collect information on the Islamic State and support air strikes in support of Iraqi security forces.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott made this announcement on October 1.

Australia will send two UAVs to Iraq, as well as an E-7A Wedgetail early warning and control plane and a KC-30A refueling plane. These aircraft will operate from al-Minhad Air Base outside of Dubai.

Australia has not yet fully committed to engaging in combat missions.

U.S.-led forces have been bombing IS targets in Iraq since August. Recently, the U.S. expanded its air campaign to include targets in Syria. Islamic State militants have overrun Sunni areas in Iraq and Syria.
