NEWTOWN, Conn. - The U.S. Navy has selected Metron Inc to assist in the development of a large-displacement unmanned undersea vehicle (LDUUV). This contract is worth $7,287,619 and includes in-lab integration and testing of autonomy and mission planning software with bench test hardware selected for deployment on the LDUUV.
Metron's contract will run for one year but includes two one-year options. If options are exercised, the total value of this contract will be an estimated $18,317,018. Work on this contract will be completed March 26, 2014. If options are exercised, contract work will continue through March 2016.
The U.S. Navy has long worked on designing new UUVs but has run into a number of problems and program delays. Tentative plans call for an advanced UUV to enter service with the U.S. Navy in the early 2020s.
