MOSCOW - According to the commander of the Russian Air Force, Col Gen. Viktor Bondarev, the service plans to acquire at least 50 Tu-160 Blackjack heavy strategic bombers eventually.

Just last month, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced plans to renew the production of Tu-160. In order to cover the costs that will go into production, at least 50 aircraft will be purchased, Bondarev explained.

So far, about 35 Tu-160s have been built but only 16 or so are in service with the Russian Air Force.

Acquisition plans will not affect the Air Force's development and procurement of the PAK DA next-generation strategic bomber, the commander confirmed. The PAK DA will not be ready for service until 2023.
