TOKYO - Japan wants to enhance its long-range strike capability. An option for meeting this need is the U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missile. Japan could order up to about 500 Tomahawk cruise missiles from the United States. These purchases could run through Fiscal Year 2027.

The number of missiles to be purchased may change. Should Japan purchase Tomahawk, the missiles are likely to equip Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers. These is also an option for fitting the missiles on MSDF submarines.
