SANDY HOOK, Conn. - In a deal prospectively worth in excess of $2 billion, the Brazilian Army has officially selected the Centauro II to fulfill its 8x8 fire support vehicle requirement in partnership with Iveco-Oto Melara and Leonardo.
Officially designated the Wheeled Armored Medium Cavalry Vehicle (Viatura Blindada de Cavalaria Média Sobre Rodas (VBC Cav - MSR 8x8), the Brazilian variant will be outfitted with a 120mm armament rather than the originally reported 105mm configuration. Although order quantities have not yet been officially announced, Brazil has previously outlined plans to acquire 98 vehicles by 2038 and 220 in total.
The Centauro II emerged victorious over an extensive list of competitors including theGeneral Dynamics Land System's LAV 700 with a Cockerill turret, Hanwha's Tigon, NORINCO's ST-1, the Ares-Elbit Systems Eitan, and the Tata Motors Kestrel.
