BRASILIA -- The Brazilian Air Force and defense-industrial contractor Avibras have signed a memorandum of understanding clearing the path for joint-development on a new long-range missile system under the umbrella of the military's MICLA-BR initiative.
According to the press release published by the Brazilian Air Force, the new program is intended to provide the Air Force with the basis for an indigenously designed, air-launched cruise-missile system (ALCM) fit for deployment on the service's incoming fleet of JAS-39 Gripen fighter aircraft.
Avibras will bear primary responsibility for the project's fundamental design and ongoing development, but will closely coordinate with relevant technical-scientific institutions of the Air Force in order to share subject matter expertise and best practices and ensure that the new system fulfills the military's technical and operational requirements.
