NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Although it may be too early to tell how the COVID-19 crisis might slow things down, the next several years should still see steady production of the Safran line of optronic masts, primarily for installation on Franco-Spanish Scorpene class submarines. If recent business activity is any indication, the systems are also likely to continue to have strong potential beyond this application.
The integrated periscope forms the optical and electronic sensor suite for nuclear-powered attack submarine classes, incorporating a thermal imager usable both in day and night. The optical and infrared channels are fully gyro-stabilized and the base of the search periscope mast contains a sextant, a high resolution camera, and the IR monitor.
In October 2015, Swedish shipyard Saab Kockums selected then Sagem to supply optronic masts for four submarines to be deployed by the Swedish Navy. The contract provides for Series 30 optronic surveillance masts to outfit two A26 class submarines and two Gotland class submarines.
In October 2019, Lockheed Martin Australia announced the appointment of Safran to design three major Combat System components for Australia's Future Submarine Program. The contract will see Safran deliver the preliminary and detailed designs for the combat system's optronics search and attack mast, navigation radar and navigation data distribution components.
