U.S. COULD FIELD SHORE-BASED ANTI-SHIP MISSILES
ARLINGTON -- The United States could deploy a coastal defense missile system. The U.S. Marine Corps and Navy could use the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) to meet this need.
The Marine Corps could use the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) as the launch vehicle. The HIMARS is already in service with the Marine Corps.
The NSM is the successor to Kongsberg's Penguin short-to-medium range anti-ship guided missile. The U.S. Navy deployed the USS Gabrielle Giffords, Independence-class littoral combat ship (LCS), in 2019 to the Indo-Pacific region. The ship was armed with the NSM.
Kongsberg Gruppen and Raytheon were selected in 2019 to install the NSM aboard most LCSs by 2023.
