WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Air Force is planning an industry day in February 2020 to gather information for its E-4B National Airborne Operations Center aircraft replacement effort. The Air Force operates four E-4Bs, colloquially known as the Doomsday plane. The aircraft are modified Boeing 747-200 aircraft intended to provide a secure and survivable command platform for government leadership in the event of a national emergency.

A pre-solicitation notice was issued on December 4, in which the service said it would conduct "Pre-Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) activities to ensure success in the EMD phase of the acquisition process."

The new aircraft will be based on a commercially-available platform.
