SEOUL -- South Korea is considering the acquisition of a nuclear-powered submarine. A task force is studying this proposal. A nuclear-powered submarine would help to enhance South Korea's deterrent capability.

South Korea pushed to build such submarines in 2003. Seoul suspended the project about a year later after it was disclosed in a media report. Presently, South Korea has not made a final decision on whether or not to procure a nuclear-powered submarine. Seoul says it is collecting information regarding this matter.

One possible option for South Korea is to develop its 3,000-ton Chang Bo Go-III submarine as a nuclear-powered boat.
