ANKARA -- Turkey will proceed with its plans to acquire Russia's S-400 air defense system. The U.S. did make an alternative offer based around the Patriot surface-to-air missile (SAM).

The U.S. and its NATO allies say the S-400 will not be integrated into the NATO air defense system. Turkey could still acquire the Patriot, according to local officials. Such a purchase will not stop the S-400 deal.

Washington is expecting a final answer from Turkey concerning the purchase of Patriot in the near future.
