BUENOS AIRES -- The Argentine patrol vessel ARA King (P-21) sailed from the docking station of the Rio Santiago Shipyard to carry out a systems test before returning to service, after having undergone a repair and maintenance process.
The objective of the voyage was to fine-tune all the repairs that were made since 2014 and to that end, different maneuvers were carried out to verify the evolution of the ship with the new rudder system, monitor the main engines, the power generation plant and the response of both axes lines and associated systems.
Anchoring maneuvers were also carried out, verifying the functioning of the systems involved and different runs were carried out in an intense wind climate.
Tasks carried out during the repair and maintenance of the ship includes reinforcement of internal bulkheads, the design and installation of a new rudder system, construction and expansion of a new Integrated Command Bridge, and modernization of crew quarters.
Furthermore, shipyard personnel carried out the cleaning of fuel tanks, the sandblasting and painting of interior rooms, the repair of the tiller and both propellers, and the verification and alignment of both lines of axes, as well as the installation of the sanitary container in order to allow the execution of Sanitary Campaigns.
The ARA King was built at Rio Santiago Shipyard and was launched in 1948 and commissioned in 1946. During its seven decades in service, the vessel has traveled to Antarctica and has operated as part of the Seat Fleet in the south of the Argentine Sea.
It is expected that for the next year the vessel will be used to train cadets of the Naval Military School and to conduct health campaigns in the ParanĂ¡-Paraguay waterway.
