S-400 WITH LONGER-RANGE MISSILE ENTERS SERVICE

MOSCOW -- The latest version of the S-400 Triumf air defense system has entered service with the Russian Army. The system uses the 40N6 long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM). The export version is the 40N6E.

The Russian Army plans to purchase more than a thousand 40N6 missiles through 2027. Moscow plans to acquire 56 S-400 battalions. The 40N6 missile is designed to strike early warning and electronic warfare aircraft, airborne command posts, strategic bombers and hypersonic cruise and ballistic missiles. The missile has a range of up to 380 kilometers.

The previous missiles entering in service with the S-400 system are the 9M96, 48N6 and 48N6DM.
