SEOUL -- South Korea is working to develop a blue-water navy. The South Korean Navy will create a task fleet consisting of three task squadrons that carry high-tech assets, such as its Aegis-equipped destroyers. Seoul aims to establish the fleet by the mid-2020s.
The South Korean Navy will also create of an aviation command in line with its pursuit of expanded maritime operations.
The ongoing efforts for inter-Korean rapprochement and potential maritime threats from surrounding powers, such as China and Japan, have highlighted the need for the Navy to refocus on its blue-water capabilities.
