LIMA -- The Peruvian Army has received 11 new 6x6 trucks built by U.S.-company Navistar International. The Army says that 10 of the trucks are built for military transport and cargo duties, while one is a mobile military workshop vehicle.
The vehicles were delivered during a ceremony held in the esplanade of the Army General Headquarters. The ceremony was presided over by Army General César Augusto Astudillo Salcedo, General Commander of the Army. He was accompanied by Colonel EP Abraham Sánchez Báez, Chief of the Army War Material Service, who pointed out that this important acquisition is part of the modernization process from army.
Peru is currently replacing its fleet of 6x6 trucks. Lima selected Rheinmetall for the project in November 2015, awarding a PEN180.7 million ($54.6 million) contract for 216 TGM 4x4 trucks, 93 TGS-MIL 6x6 trucks, and other equipment. The first batch of 63 trucks, which were expected to be delivered in March 2016, was delayed until July. The delay prompted Peru to consider fining Rheinmetall, and possibly breaking off further negotiations over industrial offsets and technology transfers.
The delivery of Navistar trucks from the U.S. is above and beyond the Rheinmetall trucks being delivered under Project Purisunchu. They are being delivered under a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement between Peru and the United States.
