BRASILIA -- The Brazilian Army is interested in acquired 10 secondhand Oshkosh M984 Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks (HEMTT). Brazil sent a request to the U.S. to acquire the vehicles through the foreign military sales (FMS) program.
The M984 is a 8x8, 10-ton tactical truck. It has been in production for the U.S. since 1982 and can be built in different configurations to fill a variety of functions, including cargo transport, fuel transport, wrecker, load handling, firefighting truck, and has even been used as a missile transporter erector launcher.
Brazil wants the trucks in the wrecker configuration and will use them as recovery vehicles in support of mechanized units.
Brazil is a major importer of arms from the U.S. Between FY11 and FY15, Brazil imported $593.1 million worth of military goods and services from the U.S. Of that total, 58.8 percent were in the form of foreign military sales, with the remaining 41.2 percent coming in the form of direct commercial sales.
