TEHRAN -- Iran returned its Khark replenishment vessel to service this week.
Fars News reported on June 20, 2018, "The Iranian Navy dispatched its helicopter-carrier warship, Khark, to the international waters after four years of overhaul." The replenishment vessel, according to the semi-official news agency, will join a mission with Sabalan, a frigate, to the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, to assist in anti-piracy operations.
The semi-official news agency did not discuss what the four-year overhaul entailed, though previously reported that Khark's navigation system had been overhauled.
Previously, in 2014, Sabalan and Khark were to make a trip to the Atlantic Ocean, though these plans were later shelved.
In November 2016, Iranian Major General Ataollah Salehi announced that the vessel was ready to be launched, saying ,"Khark warship and Tareq submarine are ready for mission after undergoing several stages of overhauling. The Khark logistic warship which is the biggest warship in West Asia has been overhauled after 35 years by the Navy experts in Bandar Abbas and will be launched soon."
