OSLO -- Norway's Defense Materiel Agency (DMA, or Forsvarsmateriell in Norwegian) is spearheading a new project on behalf of the Norwegian Army that will see new combat support platforms equipped with a mobile air defense platform. Under a contract inked on March 23, 2018, with Germany-based Flensburger Fahrzeugbau GmbH (FFG) and the Defense Land Capacity office a prototype of an Armored Combat Support Vehicle based on an upgraded M113 to M577A2 configuration will be developed.
This new vehicle will, after future qualification of the prototype, be series-produced on behalf of the Norwegian Army with options included in the contract for additional orders.
Most importantly for filling a capabilities gap, however, is that the FFG will design and develop the prototype comprising an M113 armored personnel carrier to carry a four-cell vertical launcher for IRIS-T air-to-air missiles. This will provide a niche role for the short-range air-defense (SHORAD) mobility gap. The aim is for the new Combat Support Vehicle SHORAD to link with the existing National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) command-and-control system providing an extra layer in the nation's developing air-defense network.
