MALFUNCTION, NOT MISSILE, BROUGHT DOWN ISRAELI FIGHTER

YERUSHALAYIM -- The Israel Defense Force (IDF) claims a technical malfunction caused one of its F-16 fighter to crash in Syria, not hostile action. The Syrian government said its air defenses shot down the fighter. After an investigation, Israeli officials do not believe the F-16 was hit by a surface-to-air missile (SAM).

The F-16 had been dispatched to intercept an Iranian-made unmanned air vehicle (UAV) that had entered Israeli airspace over the Golan Heights. The F-16 shot down the Iranian-made UAV just prior to crashing.

Israel also dispatched aircraft to attack the Tadmor air base and several other targets in Syria.

The Israeli fighter aircraft were met with a barrage of missiles fired by Syria. The volley of Syrian missiles was the largest number fired at an Israeli target since the Second Lebanon War in 2006.
