WASHINGTON - A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report released on August 24 criticizes the USAF's A-10 retirement plan. The report states the USAF is not fully considering the consequences of its actions nor has it acknlowleded potential risks of early divestment.

The report also states that the USAF fails to properly estimate financial savings from the divestiture, despite the fact that this is one of the USAF's major arguements for early retirement. The report further criticizes the USAF's failure to address how it will replace the A-10's combat search and rescue role. The report will have a significant effect on the ongoing debate between Congress and the USAF.
