WOULD A SPACE FORCE HEAVILY MILITARIZE THE AIR FORCE MAUI OPTICAL AND SUPERCOMPUTING SITE?
NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The United States Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing Site (AMOS) is a research laboratory and testbed center for electro optics and imaging technology, as well as a center for space situational awareness technology, surveillance, and tracking - particularly with regard to use of the Maui Space Surveillance System (MSSS). For decades the facility had been known as the U.S. Air Force Maui Optical Station or AMOS. (The AMOS acronym continues to be used after the facility's upgrade due to the term's worldwide recognition.)
The technology research facility is said to be self-supporting through user fees. However, the U.S. Air Force continues to provide management and funding for the program, as well as maintaining proper operation of the site.
Analysis indicates that over the next several years, the U.S. Air Force will likely continue to maintain and fund AMOS because the military recognizes the importance of ground-based optical space situational awareness. Should the U.S. go through with its idea of establishing the military Space Force service, it is likely AMOS may switch back to a stronger military purpose as opposed to its current scientific space research.
