COMING IN APRIL FOCUSED ANALYSES
Overall, the jet trainer market will be far more valuable for manufacturers than the turboprop market, despite the fact that they are being produced in nearly equal numbers. The value of production of jet trainers is projected to reach $13.2 billion during the forecast period, or about 73.3 percent of the value of the trainer market overall. The higher value of the jet trainer market reflects the higher price of jet aircraft versus their turboprop-powered brethren.
In terms of number of aircraft built, Hawker Beechcraft will lead the market with 491 T-6 turboprop trainers worth $2.9 billion. It will not lead the market in terms of value of production, however. This honor will belong to BAE Systems with its Hawk trainer. BAE Systems is projected to produce 151 Hawks over the next decade, having a value of production of $3.3 billion.
From 2008-2017, worldwide fighter production is forecast to total 3,345 units having a value of $164.4 billion. In the first half of the forecast period, production levels will be flat, but as the new Lockheed Martin F-35/Joint Strike Fighter program gathers steam, fighter production will surge and top 400 units a year by 2016.
Lockheed Martin is projected to lead the market for fighters, followed by the Eurofighter consortium. Other makers will see modest production, with Chinese maker Chengdu taking a larger share in the fighter market as China recapitalizes its fleet using its own indigenously designed fighters.
Korea Aerospace Industries also will enter the fighter market, with the new FA-50 fighter variant of the supersonic T-50 trainer that it developed with Lockheed Martin?s help. This new light fighter will provide a lower cost alternative to other fighters on the market, though it will have a correspondingly lower level of capability.
MARCH FOCUSED ANALYSES
During the next 10 years, production in the medium/ heavy military rotorcraft market will be driven by the production ramp-ups of a number of new rotorcraft that are entering the market. These include all-new models such as the Bell/Boeing V-22, the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH), the NH Industries NH90, and the Sikorsky H-92.
Also entering the market are enhanced versions of existing helicopters. These include the Boeing CH-47F, the Eurocopter EC 725, the Sikorsky UH-60M, and eventually the Sikorsky CH-53K. The forecast presented in this analysis indicates that a total of 3,706 medium/heavy military rotorcraft will be produced in the 2008-2017 time period. The value of this production is estimated at $84.3 billion in constant FY08 U.S. dollars.
The market for medium/heavy commercial rotorcraft is small compared to the other segments of the rotorcraft market. The medium/heavy segment of the rotorcraft market is dominated by demand from military customers, with commercial operators taking delivery of relatively few medium/heavy machines. In the civil sector, the medium/heavy helicopters that are in most demand are generally versatile, multirole aircraft capable of satisfying a wide range of requirements.
These civil medium/heavy types also tend to be at the lighter end of the medium/heavy product range, whereas military medium/heavy types currently in demand run the gamut from various intermediate models up to heavy-lift helicopters such as the Boeing CH-47 and the Sikorsky CH-53. For the 10-year period under review, Forecast International projects production of 426 medium/heavy commercial rotary-wing aircraft, valued at approximately $4.5 billion. This represents a slight increase from last year?s 10-year forecast, due primarily to increased demand in the near term.
Driven by strong sales of military and civilian helicopters, the turboshaft engine market will experience continued growth up to its peak in 2013. The major players in this segment are (in order of production rate) Pratt & Whitney Canada, Turbomeca, General Electric and Rolls-Royce. A healthy world economy continues to influence the helicopter market, and by association the helicopter engine market. Turboshaft engine production during the 2008-2017 timeframe will reach an estimated 20,432 units having a market value of $10.0 billion.
The market for main battle tanks has evolved dramatically over the last decade; it continues to evolve. Yet, despite the product glut, the market remains vibrant and lucrative for those players with successful programs. Through the coming 10-year forecast period, the Forecast International Weapons Group expects the international market to produce over 6,900 main battle tanks, worth nearly $27.9 billion. We are projecting that the international market will produce over 6,900 main battle tanks, worth nearly $27.9 billion, through 2017.
The long-range strike missile market is worth $10.6 billion over the next 10 years and will involve the production of just under 27,000 missiles. The number of countries interested in providing their navies with long-range strike missiles is growing steadily. Both the Netherlands and Japan are among the countries that could place orders soon.
Six major companies dominate this market. In order, they are Raytheon, Thales, Thyssenkrupp, Eurotorp, Nordic Defense Systems and BAE Systems. Technically, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries should be added to this list but its presence is primarily due to the very high unit costs assigned to the small number of units required by Japan. MHI does not participate in the military market outside Japan, and therefore it cannot be considered to be a leading company in the international marketplace despite its high value of sales. Thales, Thyssenkrupp, MHI and Eurotorp are all within a fraction of a percentage point of each other and, in reality, are within the limits of survey error. Finally, Lockheed Martin comes in at number nine.
Together, the six leading companies account for 63.4 percent of the total market. For the 2008-2017 period, Forecast International is projecting 29,284 systems will be produced having a total value of $10,188 million.
