RELEASED FOR MARCH 2010
THE MARKET FOR AVIATION TURBOSHAFT ENGINES
The world's economic slowdown continues to affect the aerospace industry. As a result, turboshaft engine production will continue a downward trend until a recovery begins in 2012.
Military engine production has been helping to sustain the engine market, as civil production has decreased. The U.S. military is recapitalizing its helicopter fleet and is in the middle of several large procurement programs which will remain in effect through the forecast period. Military production will continue to represent a significant percentage of total production, owing in part to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The forecast increase in 2012 is attributed to a rise in civil engine production, as this segment is more closely tied to economic conditions than is military engine production. In total, we expect 30,618 aviation turboshaft engines to be produced through 2019, having a market value of $16.9 billion.

THE MARKET FOR MEDIUM/HEAVY COMMERCIAL ROTORCRAFT
The market for medium/heavy commercial rotorcraft is far smaller than the market for military rotorcraft in the same weight class. Commercial customers for rotorcraft in this segment tend to use medium/heavy rotorcraft only for those operations that require long-distance transport of passengers or moving heavy cargo loads. The most common use of these aircraft is in support of energy exploration and offshore production facilities, an application that generates enough revenue for companies involved in the industry to justify the high cost of purchasing, maintaining, and operating a medium/heavy helicopter. Other common applications include use in forestry operations and as search-and- rescue platforms. The machines are also used in scheduled passenger transport service, but viable opportunities for passenger service are rare on a worldwide basis.
Total production of medium/heavy commercial rotorcraft is projected to reach 836 aircraft from 2010 to 2019. Annual production is forecast to fall from 75 units in 2010 to 56 units in 2012. Manufacturers will see production levels increase annually from 2013 through 2018. Production is forecast to break the 100-unit-per-year mark in 2017. The value of production during the forecast period is projected to total $11.9 billion.
Code F605 $695 Shipping & Handling: $25 U.S./$45 World.
THE MARKET FOR STRIKE MISSILES
With advances in technology, a single weapon can now perform multiple missions, such as anti-shipping, anti-radar, and strike, blurring the market for these types of missiles. In a few years, the distinct anti-ship, anti-radiation, and strike missile markets could disappear as independent entities, instead becoming submerged in a larger strike weapons market. Until that time, strike missiles (including anti-radiation missiles) will constitute one of the few missile markets that will trend upward over the next 10 years.
Just under 27,000 missiles, worth $11.5 billion, will be manufactured through 2019. The market is expected to experience some growth in both unit production and value of production over the next 10 years, of course, with periodic fluctuations.
Code F660 $995 Shipping & Handling: $25 U.S./$45 World.
THE MARKET FOR TANKS
Despite the transformational nature of modern armed forces and a growing emphasis on a medium force option, the Forecast International Weapons Group is confident the main battle tank will remain an integral part of modern force structures throughout the coming 10-year forecast period. We are projecting that the international market will produce over 6,200 main battle tanks, worth nearly $26 billion, through 2019.
The expense associated with the modernization and retrofit of high-end main battle tanks pales in comparison with the prospect of new tank procurement. Thus, we expect new production of high-end tanks to remain relatively low, accounting for 16.54 percent of all production, worth 27.19 percent of the market, through 2019.
In terms of sheer numbers, Pakistan's Al-Khalid, the Type 98 of the People's Republic of China, and the Russian Federation's T-90 (including India's licensed T-90) will continue to dominate the market, accounting for 59.76 percent of all new tanks rolling out worldwide, worth 50.47 percent of the market, through 2019.
Code F650 $695 Shipping & Handling: $25 U.S./$45 World.
THE MARKET FOR UNDERSEA WARFARE SYSTEMS
For the 2010-2019 period, Forecast International is projecting an undersea warfare market with a total value of $11,056 million, up 10.06 percent from the 2009 total of $10,045 million. Unit production through this forecast period will be 27,913, a decrease from last year's forecast of 28,982. However, the average unit cost of each system has increased by 14.2 percent over the comparable figure for last year.
The combination of a small decline in the number of systems purchased with significant increases in the total cost and individual unit prices of these systems shows that the market structure is changing. Production rates for very low-cost items like sonobuoys, that are essentially rounds of ammunition, are declining with the lack of any serious need for prosecuting submarine contacts. However, the high-cost end of the market is expanding as new unmanned vehicles, torpedoes and fire control systems are developed to replace older-generation equipment. Despite this shift, the basic market structure appears to be well established, suggesting that the future prospects for companies involved in the undersea warfare market can expect prospects that are, if not stellar, at least predictable.
