C4I Spending Heading for a Slow-Down

NEWTOWN, Conn. [March 7, 2006] ― A worldwide C4I market correction and gradual decline can be expected to occur in a few years as many of the programs that were accelerated to combat terrorism and operations in Afghanistan and Iraq draw to an end.  According to Forecast International’s 2006 “C4I Market Overview,” the market will continue to show strong growth through 2008, but will then begin to shift back to its pre-9/11 levels in 2009.

The Overview, prepared by Forecast International’s Electronics Group, forecasts that the world C4I market will be worth more than $88.344 billion over the course of the 10-year period in review (2006-2015).  But the downward spiral that will start in 2009 is expected to continue through 2015.

Based on forecast sales volume and percentage of market share, the Overview projects that the following will rank as the top five C4I companies from 2006-2015. Raytheon Co, with 13.04 percent of anticipated 10-year market share, valued at $11.522 billion, comes in as the leading C4I firm.  General Dynamics will be number two with 6.74 percent anticipated market share, worth $5.950 billion.  Lockheed Martin is third with a foreseen market share of 5.73 percent, representing $5.73 billion in value.  BAE Systems ranks fourth with a predicted 2.14 percent hold on the C4I market, representing a 10-year sales total of $1.892 billion.  Rounding out the survey at number five is Thales Raytheon Systems, expected to garner 1.85 percent of the market, worth approximately $1.636 billion over the next 10 years.

“It is no surprise that the top five C4I defense companies typically remain nearly the same year after year,” said Richard Sterk, Editor-in-Chief and Sr. Defense Electronics Analyst at Forecast International.  “The continual acquisition of rivals and smaller competitors on the part of these mega corporations has narrowed the field of major players each year,” said Sterk adding “the big get bigger and the small just simply cense to exist.  One should not be that surprised if some time in the future there is only one all powerful defense contractor called Word Defense, Inc.”
