FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FI Forecasts $12.54 Billion Multimission
Communications Market
NEWTOWN, Conn.
[Aug. 8, 2007] ― Forecast International is projecting that defense
departments worldwide will spend some $12.54 billion on 26 different
multimission communications development, acquisition, or maintenance programs
over the next decade. In its analysis entitled “The Market for Multimission
Communications Systems,” FI further projects that among the 18 different
multimission communications products for which the study provides 10-year
forecasts, departments worldwide will purchase 611,513 individual product
units.
In addition
to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the primary factors driving current
spending for multimission communications are the desire of defense departments
to use military communications systems that are operated using software.
Spending is also being driven by the high costs of and delays in development of
the U.S. Department of Defense’s Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS).
According to
the report, the Joint Tactical Radio System Program, the Bowman Tactical Radio
Program, and the Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS)
will have a major impact on the market for multimission communications in the
upcoming decade.
The JTRS
program to produce a single standard software-operated radio system for the U.S.
armed services is currently in research and development. Forecast
International is projecting that the U.S. DoD will invest some $3.42 billion
from FY07 to FY12 on JTRS R&D.
The Bowman
Tactical Radio Program is a U.K. Ministry of Defence program to procure a
family of multimission communications combat radios for the British armed
services. General Dynamics UK Ltd is the prime contractor. General Dynamics
UK has chosen ITT Corporation and Harris Corporation to supply most of the
multimission communications systems purchased under the Bowman program.
Forecast International projects that the British armed services will buy some
72,000 tactical radios under the Bowman program from 2007 to 2016.
SINCGARS is a
family of manpack, vehicular, and airborne radios manufactured by ITT Corp’s
Aerospace/ Communications Division. SINCGARS radios are software-operated.
The software-based design extends the life of the radios over time, allowing
new capabilities to be added well into the future. The most popular member of
the SINCGARS family of military radios is the PRC-119. The U.S. Department of
Defense is expected to procure massive quantities of ITT’s PRC-119 over the
next several years.
According to
“The Market for Multimission Communications Systems,” ITT Corporation, General
Dynamics, Harris Corporation, and Thales will receive 53.16 percent of the
total dollar amount that defense departments will spend on the 26 products and
programs covered in the analysis. ITT Corporation will lead with $2.46
billion, and General Dynamics, Harris, and Thales will follow with $2.37
billion, $1.31 billion, and $527.58 million in sales, respectively.
