MOSCOW - Russia will soon launch a new nuclear submarine.
At a ceremony planned for November 17, 2017, Russia will launch 'Prince Vladimir', the latest Project 955 'Borei' nuclear submarine and the first of the modernized 'Borei-A' submarines.
Russian Navy spokesman Captain 1st Rank Igor Dygalo said, "After leaving the slipway, the nuclear-powered underwater missile cruiser Prince Vladimir will undergo all the stages of shipbuilders’ and state trials that will be arranged by the Sevmash Shipyard’s delivery team and the sub’s crew under the command of Captain 2nd Rank Vladislav Druzhin."
The submarines displace 24 tons submerged and have a length of 170 meters. While submerged the submarines can travel up to 29 knots.
Russia is planning further Borei-A submarines.
Navy Admiral Vladimir Korolyov stated, "Currently, work continues at the slipway of the Sevmash Shipyard to build four more Project Borei-A serial-produced hulls of nuclear-powered underwater cruisers armed with ballistic missiles. These are the Prince Oleg, the Generalissimus Suvorov, the Emperor Alexander III and the Prince Pozharsky."
Russia intends to commission both Prince Vladimir and Prince Oleg, the fifth submarine, in 2018. The latter submarine has not yet been launched and its delivery to the Navy may be delayed over financing issues. United Shipbuilding Corporation President Alexei Rakhmanov noted in an interview earlier this week that his company aimed to get the submarine delivered on time but that financial issues might delay it.
