BOGOTA - The Colombian Army Air Assault Aviation Division is set to receive a new Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX lightweight utility aircraft. The aircraft was officially accepted by Colombia in the United States. It is now taking a ferry flight from the U.S. to Colombia, making fueling stops in seven countries in Central America.
The aircraft joins six other Grand Caravans in service with the Colombian Army. The Army originally acquired seven, but lost one in a fatal accident last year. The fleet of Grand Caravans is used for transport, liaison, command and control, and aeromedical evacuation missions.
The Cessna 208 is an unpressurized, single-turboprop-powered, utility/passenger aircraft. The 206B Grand Caravan EX features a more powerful PT6A-140 turboprop engine, boosting shaft horsepower by 25 percent, increasing rate of climb by 38 percent, reducing takeoff roll by 350 feet (106 m), and improving performance in hot temperatures and at high altitudes. The EX achieved certification in January 2013.
