BERLIN - A court in Germany is blocking the planned procurement of an armed unmanned air vehicle (UAV). Germany wants to provide this capability to its armed forces.

A state court in Düsseldorf stopped plans to lease "Heron TP" UAVs from Israel. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) builds this system and is teamed with Airbus to meet this requirement. This bid defeated a rival offering from General Atomics.

General Atomics is suing saying its system is less expensive and offers better performance. The company says it was not fairly treated by the German government. The court did not agree, but General Atomics is appealing and this is delaying the UAV deal.

Eventually, Germany wants to procure a locally made UAV. The proposed lease of the Israeli UAVs is to end in 2025.
