U.K. MOD ANNOUNCES $690 MILLION IN MISSILE ORDERS
LONDON - British Secretary of State for Defense, Sir Michael Fallon, announced on April 21 that his ministry had awarded three new missile contracts representing a combined value of GBP539 million ($690 million). The three contracts cover new orders for Meteor, Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) and Sea Viper missile systems from European missile house MBDA's facility at Stevenage.
The first contract valued at GBP41 million ($52.5 million) covers Meteor air-to-air missiles that will be equipped on the Royal Air Force Typhoon fleet starting in 2018 and the incoming F-35Bs from 2024.
The second contract - valued at GBP175 million ($224 million) - covers an in-service support contract for the anti-air Sea Viper weapon system which defense warships from missile and jet fighter threats. The system is utilized on the Royal Navy's Type-45 destroyers.
Finally, there is a GBP323 million ($414 million) contract for a purchase of a new batch of air defense missiles - the Common Anti-air Modular Missile, or CAMM - for the British Army and Royal Navy. The CAMMs intended for the Royal Navy will be utilized on the new Type 26 frigates being planned and within the Sea Ceptor weapon system outfitted on the Navy's Type-23 frigates.
