KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Boustead Naval Shipyard (BNS) for the delivery of four Littoral Mission Ships at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) 2017 exhibition on March 20. The contract is part of a collaborative effort between Malaysia and China that will see BNS partner with a Chinese shipyard on the four-year project.
The Littoral Mission Ships (LMSs) will be designed by the partnering Chinese yard. The first two vessels will then be built in China and delivered in 2019 and 2020. The final two ships will be built locally by BNS and delivered in Malaysia in 2021.
Reports of the Chinese-Malaysian collaborative project emerged in early November 2016 when Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak announced that his country would be purchasing at least four - and as many as 10 - of the Chinese-designed LMSs. Most likely these new ships are scaled-down derivatives of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Type 056A (Jiangdao-class) corvette, similar to those ordered by the Bangladesh Navy, the Durjoy-class.
