BRASILIA - Brazil and the United States have discussed the potential sale of secondhand C-23B Sherpas to the Brazilian Army. The C-23B is a high-wing, fixed-wing transport aircraft designed to operate from small, remote runways. It has a maximum speed of 281 mph, and can accommodate 30 passengers or 2,000 pounds of cargo.

Discussions were held at Brazilian Army headquarters in Brasilia on March 15 when the commander of U.S. Army South Maj. Gen. Clarence K.K. Chinn traveled to Brazil to discuss the United States' participation in Amazon Log multinational logistics exercise held in Tabatinga, Brazil every November.

While at Brazil Army headquarters, Gen. Chinn also met with leaders of Brazil's Comando LogĂstico (COLOG) to talk about the C-23B.

Brazil first indicated an interest in the rugged fixed-wing transport aircraft in September 2016. The Army has a requirement for a small, rugged transport aircraft to support small Army bases in the Amazon region. As the government looks for ways to save money during the worst recession in Brazil's history, secondhand options have become appealing. At the same time, the C-23B meets Brazil's needs.
