HILL AFB, Utah - The Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) took delivery of a batch of four refurbished and upgraded F-16s from the U.S. Air Force's Ogden Air Logistics Complex at Hill Air Force Base in Utah on March 14. These four jets form part of a 24-unit Indonesian acquisition via the U.S. Excess Defense Articles (EDA) arms transfer mechanism. Each jet originally served with the U.S. Air Force and various Air National Guard units prior to decommissioning and storage at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group open-air depot located at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona.
These used F-16s - each jet had amassed approximately 5,000 training and combat hours prior to being withdrawn from U.S. service - undergo a refurbishment and upgrade to Block 52 status (upon which they are designated F-16ID by TNI-AU) as part of a $670 million U.S. government-to-government Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement announced by the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on November 17, 2011. Ogden Air Logistics Complexes 573rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron has conducted the restoration and upgrade work on these F-16s since the process began in 2013.
The TNI-AU received the first three of its "new" F-16s (one C, two Ds) on July 25, 2014. The latest batch delivery - involving three single-seat C variants and a lone D two-seater - brings the total delivered so far to 18 F-16s. The final six units are currently undergoing refurbishment and modification and are to be delivered to Indonesia later in the year.
