HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. - The U.S. Air Force has awarded Raytheon of Woburn, Mass., has a $1.1-billion, fixed-price, incentive-firm letter contract (FA8730-17-C-0010) for a Qatar early warning radar system. This contract is 100 percent foreign military sales and is the result of a sole-source acquisition.
Under the terms of the contract, Raytheon will provide an early warning radar system that will be integrated into the Qatar integrated air and missile defense enterprise. The contract work will be performed in Woburn, Mass., and is expected to be complete by June 30, 2021.
The U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., is the contracting activity.
Forecast International wonders if this new radar is in fact related to Raytheon's FPS-132 Upgraded Early Warning Radar. It is one of the U.S.'s most powerful long-range early warning radars and its technology transfer could be seen as a risk. However, combined with another early warning radar of unknown type being installed in Taiwan, it could be part of a strategy to contain Iran and China's missile ambitions.
