NEW DELHI - The Indian government gave the go-ahead on February 23 for the procurement of the Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MR-SAM) system from Israel that will be used to supply the Indian Army. The project will be implemented by the state-run Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Israeli Aircraft Industry (IAI) who jointly developed the 70km-range system following a government-to-government agreement with Israel in February 2015.

The Indian Army intends to use the MR-SAM to replace its aging, Russian-made systems. The proposal cleared by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls for the induction of five regiments of the MR-SAM missile system which will each feature 40 firing units and over 200 missiles per system. The delivery of the first MR-SAM will begin 72 months after the signing of the contract.
