AARHUS, Denmark - Terma has received an award from AENA to upgrade the existing Terma Surface Movement Radar (SMR) at Madrid Barajas Airport. This means that Madrid Barajas will join the long list of airports to operate the new generation solid state SCANTER 5502 Surface Movement Radar. The delivery will be effectuated together with local partner SEAIRTECH.

To Terma, this delivery is the first to include the new Terma Extractor. It allows the radar to take processed Raw Video and deliver it from an ASTERIX output into the Airport’s ATC system.

The purpose of the Surface Movement Radar is to maximize safety in airports by allowing Air Traffic Controllers to monitor, advice, and instruct aircraft, vehicles, personnel, etc. moving on the ground in an airport. A radar is very suitable for this purpose as it covers a large area and operates independently of light conditions (day/night), visibility conditions (e.g. fog, possible precipitation, rain, and snow).

The SCANTER 5502 Solid State Surface Movement Radar is integrated into the airport’s Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A- SMGCS) as the primary non-corporative surveillance sensor.

Besides Madrid Barajas, Terma Surface Movement Radars are in operation in eight major Spanish airports including Bilbao, Ciudad Real, Tenerife, and Santiago De Compostella.

The company states that over 120 international airports around the globe are equipped with SMR radars from Terma.
