NAGOYA, Japan - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI) and its Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp subsidiary have delayed initial delivery of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) from mid-2018 to mid-2020. MHI attributed the schedule change to revisions of certain systems and electrical configurations on the aircraft to meet the latest requirements for certification.
MHI said that the design changes will not affect the MRJ's structure, nor its performance, fuel consumption, or functionality of systems. The MRJ made its first flight in November 2015, and three test aircraft are currently in flight testing in the U.S.
This past November, MHI established a Business Promotion Committee, chaired by MHI president and CEO Shunichi Miyanaga, to oversee the development and long-term business performance of the MRJ.
A total of 233 firm orders, 170 options, and 24 purchase rights have so far been accumulated for the MRJ. Two models comprise the MRJ family of regional jetliners: the 78-passenger MRJ70 and the 92-passenger MRJ90. The MRJ90 is the lead variant in the series.
