TOULOUSE, France - Airbus commenced the final assembly of the first A330neo, an A330-900 model, at the company's Final Assembly Line in Toulouse, France, with the joining of the wings to the center fuselage at station 40.
The A330neo family includes the A330-800 and A330-900, which feature Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the new AirSpace by Airbus cabin, and a new wing with Sharklet wingtip devices. Airbus said that the A330neo will reduce fuel consumption by 14 percent on a per-seat basis.
"We have started with a very tight development schedule and are today right on time," said Odile Jubecourt, Airbus Head of the A330neo Program. "I am happy to say we are in good shape to meet the high standards of maturity and reliability our customers expect from us and I want to thank the teams for this outstanding achievement."
The A330neo provides an additional 400 nautical miles of range, resulting in a 6,550-nautical-mile range for the A330-900 and a 7,500-nautical-mile range for the A330-800. To date, ten customers have ordered a total of 186 A330neos.
The A330-800 and the A330-900 share 99 percent commonality. The entire A330 fleet, including the neo models, shares 95 percent commonality.
The A330 series has garnered more than 1,600 orders to date. More than 1,250 A330s are flying with over 120 airlines worldwide on a wide range of routes, from domestic and regional flights to long-range intercontinental services.
