PENTAGON - Boeing is being awarded an $8 million modification to a previously issued ordering agreement to procure two validation and verification kits, and two sets of associated support equipment/special tooling kits, as well as the non-recurring engineering effort to modify the T-45 airframe engine inlet to correct chronic engine surges and stalls issues.
Work will be performed in St. Louis, Missouri, and is expected to be completed in August 2017.
More than 450 engine surge events have been documented over the service life of the T-45 fleet, including more than 70 that required an emergency engine shutdown and restart. Because the T-45 has only one engine, such a failure can have potentially serious consequences.
To correct the problem, the Navy has funded a program worth $312.9 million that includes modifications to the aircraft's airframe, engine, and fuel control system.
