MADRID - ROMATSA, the Romanian civil air navigation authority, has commissioned Indra to supply radars to monitor the air movements in the area corresponding of the country's main airport, Henri Coanda in Bucharest, and two other international airports, Cluj-Napoca and Bacau.
Indra will construct a station near Henri Coanda airport that will be equipped with a new primary and secondary radar. The goal is to reduce the separation between aircraft, increasing airport capacity, through the new radars' increased accuracy and security.
The Cluj and Bacau airports will receive secondary radars that incorporate Mode S aircraft identification technology, the latest standard. Enhanced safety levels and agility in traffic control will be achievable.
Prior to this contract, ROMATSA had contracted Indra to modernize the control center for the Bucharest area, as well as four other approach centers. In total, 15 ATC towers will see their ATM systems renewed.
Indra will equip the installations with systems incorporate trajectory-based 4D, interoperability, and conflict prediction. This allows some relief from the repetitive tasks that ATC operators would typically encounter, and allows them to concentrate more fully on tactical planning.
The improvements contracted by ROMATSA will also comply with the requirements set by the SESAR JU consortium, with the goal of implementing the Single European Sky (SES) next-gen ATC program.
