ERLANGEN, Germany - The world's first Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines installed at a Brisbane Cogeneration Station have reached a milestone of 100,000 operating hours.
Bulwer Island Energy Partnership (BIEP) is the cogeneration station at BP's Bulwer Island Crude Oil Refinery in Brisbane. The 33-MW electrical and 55-MW thermal-equivalent cogeneration/combined-cycle power station provides energy to BP's refinery and was built as part of the Queensland Clean Fuels Project in 2000.
The cogeneration plant is used to produce steam from the exhaust gases off the gas turbines, which is required as part of the oil refinery process. Natural gas is the primary fuel supply for the gas turbines, although refinery gas is also used in the boilers on site.
The two 12.9-MW turbines were installed in 2000 to fulfill BP's requirements to produce electricity through steam generation by running in combined cycle.
