KAZAN, Russia - The modernization program for Russia's Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bombers will be completed in 2019, says Boris Naishuler, the director of the Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Production Association's design center.
As announced in 2012, the entire fleet of 15 Tu-160 Blackjacks is now undergoing a complete modernization.
"The first stage of modernization has been completed; the second stage connected with replacement of nearly all onboard radioelectronic equipment on existing aircraft is expected to be completed in 2019," Naishuler said.
The aircraft are also expected to receive upgraded NK-32 engines from the Motorostroitel plant in Samara beginning in late 2016.
At least five bombers are expected to complete the modernization program this year, Air Force Commander Viktor Bondarev said in February.
