NEWTOWN, Conn. - Airbus Helicopters launched an enhanced version of the EC 225 in February 2014. The new model, which is called the EC 225e, features Turbomeca Makila 2B engines, updated avionics, an additional fuel tank, and increased maximum takeoff weight and payload.
The EC 225e is intended to fill increasing demand by customers for longer range, particularly oil and gas operators, which are moving ever farther offshore in the search for additional energy reserves. Another promising market for the EC 225e is the burgeoning helicopter leasing segment. Lease Corporation International became a launch customer for the EC 225e in early 2014 with an order for up to 15 of the new model. Many of the helicopters acquired by leasing outfits ultimately end up with oil and gas operators.
Airbus Helicopters has recently refreshed the Mk 1 line-up with the introduction of several upgraded versions. These include the AS 332L1e, the short-fuselage AS 332C1e, and the military AS 532AL+. These three models feature the avionics and autopilot of the EC 225/725. The introduction of these enhancements should help keep the Mk 1 in production for years to come.
