ROME - AgustaWestland has announced the delivery of an AW139 helicopter to the Chilean gendarmerie (Carabineros). The helicopter has entered service with the Carabineros Air Guard, the company reported on April 16.
The Carabineros issued a tender for the acquisition of a new twin-engine helicopter last September and selected the AgustaWestland AW139 in January 2015. The AW139 was chosen over the the Airbus Helicopters AS365N3 and EC155B1.
The new aircraft will be operated by the Air Guard for air policing operations and border patrols. It will also be used for personnel and cargo transport and for other support missions.
Prior to delivery, the helicopter was configured with 15 seats, four stretchers for medical evacuation, a rope for rapid descent, two VHF-AM communication systems, a C mode transponder, a GPS, a radio altimeter, a navigation screen, and a SATCOM Flightdeck Sky Connection satellite phone system.
