U.S. WILL PROVIDE AIRCRAFT TO PANAMA FOR ANTI-DRUG OPERATIONS
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - The United States government has made four helicopters and one transport plane available to Panama's National Air Service, Senan. The temporary donation includes two Bell UH-1H and two Agusta Westland AW139 helicopters and one Douglas DC-3 transport aircraft.
The donation will be made by the United States Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. According to the Bureau's director in Panama, Ramón Negrón, the aircraft will support training and logistical activities as well as enhance air mobility and support capabilities in the country.
The bureau's program in Panama will consist of three phases over a course of six months. The goal of the program is to reduce drug trafficking and threats by criminal organizations in remote areas of the country, Negrón said. Although the aircraft are only slated to remain the country during the program, Negrón is optimistic that they could eventually be transferred to Panama.
