CANBERRA, Australia - Australia's Defense Materiel Organization (DMO) awarded Supacat Group with an AUD105 million ($98 million) contract for 89 special operations vehicles on August 19. The new vehicles will be based on Supacat's Mk2 Extenda high-mobility transport (HMT) vehicle and will fill the DMO Special Operations Vehicles - Commando (SOV-Cdo) requirement outlined under the Department of Defense' Joint Project 2097 Phase 1B (REDFIN) program. Supacat was tapped as the preferred bidder for Joint Project 2097 Phase 1B by the DMO in 2012 and had since successfully undertaken the program's initial prototype development and evaluation phase.
The aim of Joint Project 2097 Phase 1B is to provide Australia's Special Forces with improved tactical mobility within an air-transportable vehicle component.
The new Extenda HMTs will be built in Australia by Supacat Team Australia, based in Melbourne. Once in service the SOV-Cdo's will replace the fleet of aging Land Rovers.
