MOSCOW - Russia' new Arctic command will officially become operational on December 1, 2014.
President Putin made the announcement on November 24 during a meeting with top military commanders. Plans to create the command were just announced this past February.
The new command, the Northern Fleet-Unified Strategic Command (Severny Flot-Obedinyonnoye Strategicheskoye Komandovaniye, SF-OSK), or just "North", will operate from the Northern Fleet's military base in the Arctic zone. The command will exercise control over all Russian military forces in the Arctic. It will have the status of a military district but will not officially be designated one. By 2017, North will consist of two arctic-warfare brigades and elements from the Northern Fleet and from air force and air defense units, including some 200 motorized infantry troops.
According to Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Land Forces, Col.Gen. Oleg Salyukov "the first brigade is being formed in the Murmansk region, while the second will be formed in 2016 in the Yamal-Nenets autonomous district."
In December 2013, President Putin ordered the military to increase its presence in the Artic and to develop new military infrastructure in the region. Moscow is particularly interested in the natural resources located within the Arctic zone as well as asserting its geopolitical power in the area.
