NEWTOWN, Conn. - The Russian Navy has ordered a second Project 11711 Ivan Gren-class landing ship.
According to Sergei Vlasov, the director general of the Nevskoe Design Bureau, the ship will be identical to the first vessel in the class, the Ivan Gren, with the exception that some of the international sources components used on the Ivan Gren will have to be made domestically due to the current EU-imposed embargo.
Development of the first Project 11711 ship began in the last 1980s but the ship was not laid down until 2004. Since 2010, the project has been subject to some major changes in order to reduce the construction costs. The main changes were cuts in the ship's armament and electronic systems. The ship was slated for completion in 2013 but this timeline was not met. According to Vlasov, the vessel will finally be commissioned in 2015.
Plans call for three more in the class to be built.
The Ivan Gren-class has a displacement of about 6,000 tons and depending on the mission can carry up to 300 troops, or 13 main battle tanks or 36 armored personnel carriers.
