NEW DELHI - Rafael will provide Barak 1 surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) to the Indian Navy. Under a $143 million contract, Rafael will deliver 260 Barak 1 SAMs over the next 18 months. The Indian Navy is facing a grave shortage of SAMs.
Rafael manufactures the Barak 1 SAM, while Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) builds the command and control system. Elta provides the radar.
India and Israel are also developing the Barak 8 SAM. The partners signed an agreement four years ago. Once development is complete, the Indian Navy will purchase hundreds of missiles. This deal could be worth $1.4 billion.
