KIEV, Ukraine - Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has agreed to cut the salaries of top level deputies and cabinet ministers. The decision will free up some UAH400 million ($33 million) which will be redirected to the state budget.

Last week, Finance Minister Alexander Shlapak announced that the government needs at least $26 billion to continue military operations against Pro-Russian separatists. At least $800 million (UAH 9.1 billion) will be required for defense operations for the remainder of the year, Shlapak said.

Amendments will be made to the state budget and tax code in order to reduce the salaries by UAH10,000 ($830) each. Monthly paychecks will now be UAH6,500 ($540) compared to the previous amount of UAH17,000 ($1,400).
